Elk Mountain
Elk Mountain is a great intermediate mountain bike ride just a few miles out of Stanley, Idaho. The trail begins at the upper parking lot for Stanley Lake. To get to Stanley Lake drive about 5 miles west from Stanley on Highway 21 you will see a sign to turn left to head to Stanley Lake. Drive down the Stanley Lake road until it dead ends at the upper parking lot by the lake. To ride the mountain bike trail continue up the dirt road from the parking lot. About two miles up the road you will see the trail head for Elk Mountain loop. Take a left and continue on the single-track. The first mile and a half of the single-track is a fairly technical, cobble filled ride and may require some walking in places. The trail descends and soon opens out to beautiful Elk Meadow, home to a sea of purple wildflowers this time of year. To continue on the loop trial take the right just before the meadow and enjoy a beautiful rolling ride in and out of trees and meadows working your way clockwise around Elk Mountain. The trail links up with some dirt roads with Elk Mountain loop signed at all junctions. You will finish with some nice views of McGown peak and a road ride back to the parking lot.

If you want to hike to Elk Meadow drive up the dirt road from the Stanley Lake parking lot 1.75 miles to the Elk Mountain loop trail head. Follow the trail down 1.5 miles to the meadow. It is rocky so watch your step and take your time to spot all the wonderful wildflowers.

Continuing on the Elk Mountain road to the overlook is a terrific snowmobile trip, but we’ll tell you more about that this winter!

Washington Lake

There are dozens of worthy trails in the Sawtooths and the White Clouds but here’s a recommendation from your friends at Smiley Creek Lodge.

Washington Lake is accessed from the Fourth of July Creek road about eight miles north of Smiley Creek Lodge on Highway 75. Drive just over 10 miles up Fourth of July Creek road to the trail head for Fourth of July and Washington Lakes. The hike is easy to moderate with not much steep terrain. It’s about six miles round trip and should take the average hiker about four hours.

From the trail head, cross Fourth of July Creek on the log bridge to the right and follow the well marked trail. Continue past the turn-off for Born Lakes and Ants Basin and you’ll soon pass Fourth of July Lake. Continue on the hiker’s right side of Fourth of July Lake and climb over a small pass which will drop down into Washington Lake. Both of these lakes have stunning views of the rugged mountains surrounding them and support populations of trout. New wildflowers are popping up around here daily. By the middle of the month the meadows surrounding these lakes should be glorious.

Smiley Creek Lodge sells fishing licenses and hiking supplies including several maps and guidebooks for this and other hikes in the Sawtooth and White Cloud Mountains. We can also make you some lunch to go from our deli counter. Please call or stop by for orders.
